The making of M's Magnificent Chart

Why do I make this chart?
I have been interested in music and music charts since the mid-eighties. In 1988 I decided to make my own personal chart. The highest positions were reserved for the songs that I liked and were already in the Dutch Top 40, the other places were for songs I liked at that moment.
Because I thought that some song deserved the number one position in my own chart I decided to make another chart, which contained songs independent from the position in the Dutch Top 40. First it were 50 songs, then 60 and at the end of 1992 it were 100 songs: M's Magnificent Top 100 became the look it now still has.

How do I compile it?
Why is a song at number 6 and not at number 7 for instance? The way I work: when I listen to a good song (on the radio, on tape, on TV, on video or even on my computer) I give that song 3.00 points (= minutes a 'normal' song is played, for extended versions I give the song 4.00 points and when I know the exact playing time the song gets that number of points). At the end of a week I count all the points. Then I use the formula: New total = (old total from last week + this weeks points) - ( 2 times (old total + this weeks points) divided by 10). Get it? ;-)
For example: a song that had 24.00 points total last week and has this week only 3.00 points will receive (24.00 + 3.00) - (2 * (24.00 + 3.00) / 10) = 21.60 points. Doing it this way the chart becomes a realistic look, that means a song cannot easilly become number one in its first week on the chart and a song cannot drop from 2 to let's say 96 in one week. In other charts this isn't realistic too.

What kind of music is in it?
When you take a look at the chart, you see that this chart has a lot of dancemusic in it. But I also like rock music and electronic music. What you will never see on this chart is Rhythm'n'Blues and that kind of stuff, because I don't like that music!

Why are albumtracks and even older songs on the chart?
An album or B-side often contains more beautiful music. It would be a waste not to put great songs on the chart, just because it hasn't been released as a single yet. (Maybe it will be released in the future or is already released in a far foreign country I don't even know). Because I put all songs on this list I listen to in a week, it can happen that some older song reaches the chart. When I feel the need to play a lot of Abba (for instance) in a week, the next week some Abba tracks will enter the chart! This way a song never quits the chart, it always stays in it, but beneath number 100... But don't worry, this is not an oldie-chart. As you can see the highest positions are mostly brand new tracks, sometimes even tracks which haven't been released yet (tracks I heard in Clubs or during live performances). The most perfect example is RMB with the song "Everything". I heard it in November 1996 and it reached number one in my chart in the beginning of 1997, but the song wasn't released until Mai 1997!
